the Forty Minute Sermon!

the Forty Minute Sermon

This quirky painting has been in the works for a very long time. First, it was just an idea, a visual picture in the gallery of my mind for several years. Eventually I sketched it out and prepared a canvas to use, only it went for another picture. I built another stretcher, but then, I needed the canvas to experiment with techniques for yet another picture I was painting. I finally re-primed the canvas and started this “simple, easy, quickie painting". ONLY it “weren’t” a “simple, easy, quickie painting!!!” After working on it enough to get a good start, I realized it was going to take a while. It did! From conception to completion, it has been a five year journey that has included about twenty-five to thirty hours of drawing and actual brushtime.

I think many of us who regularly attend church can identify with “the Forty Minute Sermon”. Sometimes, even though the sermon is instructive and interesting, eyelids get heavy. One morning I looked around and saw eight people asleep and the sermon was really good! Anyway, you find yourself fighting sleep only to lose. The eyelids close, sealed much like the tomb. Your “angelic” spouse always knows what is happening and sends the “loving nudge”, followed by the “pay attention nudge”, and the “wake up nudge”. When the nudges don’t work, your angel uses the “resurrection jab”!!! The seal is broken and the eyeballs pop open! A “hallelujah moment” just occurred.

This painting is meant to bring a smile or giggle. If it does, my work has not been in vain. Thanks for viewing.

Acrylic paint on triple primed canvas. Protected with three coats of UV resistant varnish. The edges are painted black. The painting is wired and ready to hang. 30” x 6 7/8” x 1 1/2”

The Forty Minute Sermon is not available for purchase at this time. Remember that when it becomes available, it will make a wonderful, fun painting for your pastor, church office or foyer.

What am I doing???

I have not posted for nearly two months! Does time fly or what? It has been a while since I have painted. I spent over two weeks sick. I got a severe lung infection that lasted over two weeks. I had the same thing over Christmas and totally missed all Christmas celebrations. This time, however, was different. While suffering with the infection, I also got sick with stomach flu or food poisoning. The symptoms are much the same. Since I had eaten some meat that, looking back, was questionable, and being exposed to people that had been having flu at a family event, who knows?

Now that I have made the transition from Rinky Dink, Humor Technician, (clown) to painter, I decided it was time to organize my massive clown prop, gag and magic inventory and start disposing of these items. I have found an art website in which I have set up PDFs of my equipment. You just go to my web page: http://www.rallanlister.com/. There you will find a menu box "Allan and the Art of Clown." Nested within that category you will find "Downloads." Right now there are two groups of miscellaneous items. There are many more to come. Some of these are complete shows and messages. Some are short skits or schticks. Many have props hand built specifically for the program performed. In one way or another, these are all works of art.

If anyone is interested or has questions, contact my through my contact page at: http://www.rallanlister.com/contact. If you have a question about a specific item, be sure to include the item number included in the information box below the picture.

My plan now is to paint a couple of paintings this week maybe more. I have more ideas than time, but I guess that's good!

Fire in the Garage - AWD 105

This was a stubborn fire as it crept into the house. Our crew attacked from the garage door when we finally got it open. The cause was the sixteen year old son. He spilled gasoline on the garage floor while filling the lawnmower. He decided to throw a match on the gas to see what would happen. — He found out!

Acrylic paint over double primed stretched canvas. The gallery wrapped 8" x 10" x 3/4" painting is continued around the edges. It is protected by a minimum of two coats of UV resistant varnish.

This art would make a wonderful gift for a firefighter family member or friend. It would also make a great remembrance for a brave hero, either volunteer or professional, who is retiring from the fire service. Perfect for home, den, "man (or woman) cave" or the fire station. If you have a child, grandchild or young person interested in fire fire fighting or emergency service, add this to their room decor. Don't forget the fire buff or collector of fire memorabilia they would love original artwork for their collection!

Gallery wrapped with picture continued around edges for a fun effect.         Wired, ready to hang.

Show at Art Room 114 in Eldorado Kansas

Last Friday, February 3, 2012 was the reception for a new show called "A Family Affair" held at Art Room 114 at 114 N. Main, Eldorado Kansas.

As you can see from the photos, there was quite a crowd. A small group played music and my wife and I got to meet a lot of people.

The show featured at least two artists from the same family. My daughter also entered a charcoal sketch, a landscape into the show. Most people don't know the she is a great artist. Her work is primarily in pencil and charcoal. Unfortunately, she had to work and missed the opening of the show. The show will be continuing until March 31st. If you live nearby or get a chance to visit Eldorado, take a few minutes to stop by. The quality of the artwork is wonderful and you are sure to enjoy your visit.

Don't forget my new website: http://www.rallanlister.com/

Visit my new website!!! — http://www.rallanlister.com/

I have been working on a new website. Though I signed up for it last summer, I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue using it. There are so many art web hosts out there I couldn't make up my mind. I have currently uploaded a little over 50 pictures to the sight.

One of the thing I really like about it is that it's a sight for all forms of creativity not just 2D wall "art." There are nine main categories from 3-D Art to performing arts to literature. They have a category for beauty, environmental art, graphic design, urban art, and visual art.

I will be able to offer my clown props for sale in several different categories. Yes clowning is an art! I had never really considered myself as an "artist" until I retired and took up painting seriously. Now I realize that I really just changed mediums from painting my face to painting a canvas! I invite you to check out my new website at:

I Protest Protests

The show, now showing in the main gallery at City Arts,
334 N Mead, Wichita, Ks is call "Seeds of Change: Replanted". It is somewhat political in nature. It mostly illustrates the need for changes within America. I just had the opportunity to visit the show and was pleasantly surprised. The works are excellent with the messages clear.

I Protest Protests!!

Every time I see or hear of a new protest, I say or think: “I protest protests!” I usually get lots of giggles or snickers from those around me. The truth is, I really don’t like them! Besides being disruptive and destructive, it seems everyone becomes lemmings just following “whoever”. But in actuality, protest is sometimes necessary. When you look through the eyes of world history, protest led to the change of government in France, gave birth to the nation we call home, and is currently at work in the middle east.

Glimmer of Hope

This was one of my entries called "Glimmer of Hope". My point is that we are filled with greed, pleasure seeking and self-centeredness. These personal attitudes affect all decisions we make. We tend to elect leadership who promise to give us everything we want instead of what is good for our     nation as a whole. They lie and promise us everything and we continually fall for it.

If we as a nation, do not take more personal responsibility, we will lose our rights, including the right to vote. Our wonderful, free nation will be lost. The candle flame is about out, but with the upcoming election, there is still a “spark”  and a “Glimmer of Hope”

Happy New Year!!!

December 2011 was quite a month! We traveled to Bartlesville OK to pick up the paintings from the "Artfest" show at Grace Community Church. It was a very good show. I really recommend it for next year. Later in December while painting two pictures for a show at City Arts in Wichita, I began to feel sick. My usual coughing spells got much worse to the point I WAS ROBBED! I was robbed of our family Christmas celebration! I spent all of Christmas Day in bed, asleep. The plan was to go to my number two daughter's home. My wife and everyone else went. I think I had an asthmatic infection rather than the flu. It took a while to get over.  The year and month ended even more sadly with the passing of my wife's mother on December 29th. She was eighty-six and we found out in October she had cancer so it was not unexpected, but she is missed. I did get my paintings done enough to get them into the show at City Arts. They will be shown in the following posts.

Stop! Gas Line!!! AWD 97

Fires often lead to unexpected surprises that can lead to unexpected consequences.

This motel converted into apartments gave us a big surprise. It was almost too BIG a surprise! The fire had spread from one apartment up through the attic. There were no fire stops so it was an easy march for the fire from one end of the building to the other.

I was cutting through the roof, but, smoke was inhibiting our view. As I swung the axe, it felt like it hit something solid. The next two or three blows felt the same way. A gust of wind suddenly blew the smoke away. My partner stopped me from taking another swing. I was hitting an illegal  one inch natural gas line running along the peak of the roof! The notches I had accidently cut into the pipe told us the story. About one more swing and we would have been blown off the roof by an explosion!

10" x 12" x 3/4" Original one of a kind hand painted acrylic painting. Painted on canvas gallery wrapped over a hand built stretcher. Edges are painted to extend the picture. It is protected with 2 coats of UV resistant varnish.

This or one of my other paintings would make a wonderful gift for that friend or relative who is a fire fighter. Give for an award for a service award.

Grandpa, Tell Us Again How It Began

This is my final version, finished yesterday. Instead of telling ghost stories to the kids, why not share the true story of Creation with them? What a time to share!

This painting is just under 30" x 30" x 1 1/2" Gallery wrapped with edges painted black, ready to hang.

This painting will be placed in a show "Artfest, 2011" at Grace Community Church in Bartlesville Oklahoma, December 2-4, 2011. for further information about the show call the church at: 918-333-2030 or

The Church web is: www.gccbartlesville.org

Grandpa, Tell us again 2

By the time I was half through this version of the painting, I had in my mind what I would do in the final version. I was anxious to start and the deadline is looming. The days of creation are more a part of the clouds and God was to be a part of the clouds above. So this picture remains unfinished at this time. Don't know if I'll finish it or come up with another subject. It is 10x12" on gallery wrapped canvas.
